I watched a 'Nova' episode where they tried to recreate a Roman bath. They also said that instrument you showed was used to scrape the oil and dirt off the people, and flung it against a wall. The dirt/oil mixture was saved and used as a supposed medicine. The bath workers would oil up the people and do the scraping work, hence where the oil came from. As for clothes, not only used for warmth/protection, but as a way of displaying social status and wealth, a multi-cultural occurrence.

As I said in one of my recent videos, "Nudity is the default position". I don't know what the problem is. Other than nobody wants to look at my tired old body anyways. Good video!

I truly love how you choose to word your comments. I'm not trying to sound sarcastic either!

Bizarre indeed! As if the poor woman's dignity was not compromised already : to blur a nipple suggests a very crude set of priorities by the producers and the expectation of daft sensibilities on the part of the viewers! Good comment.

This video reminded me of something bizarre i saw on discovery channel. It was a reality show from an emergency room, and a woman from a horrible motorcycle accident came in. The woman was practically reduced to a lump of .. meatloaf.. it was terrible to watch, intestines hanging out, bones sticking out.. and a little part of this meatheap was blurred out... it was one of her nipples. It didnt even look like it was in its original spot, laying by itself to one side, but that had to be blurred :/

Cool video. As a side reference, I was reminded of a good song called "Nantes" by a band called Beirut: watch?v=MJwjZSHXtSs

you are wise to hide behind the couch my nipples scare the daleks!

I too saw a film on Jewish life with the same curious practice. Very odd. As for YT's other recommendations, I suspected my title would bring a procession of naughty bits on show!

OMG, I'm hiding behind the couch already! Seriously, I look forward to seeing your videos - as usual.

hi tenneral as usual allways entertaining and informative. i will be making some video's shoiwing my nipples from know on.

Hahah - Hahah Tenneral after watching and commenting and 5 starting your "naked" video. Good ole youtube thinks I like "that sort of thing" and is now offering me other videos with "Naked..." in the title. Hahah- (: Maybe I'll do an exhaustive study on the suject ...

I understand that ankles (on women) we're once not to be viewed "exposed" and had to be covered at all times. I wonder what parts of the human body would be left "exposed" if all the shameful parts through history were tallied and added together. eg I saw a doco on telly about a jewish family. The mother thought that exposing here hair was ... wrong. So what was her solution? She wore a wig! She wore fake hair to hide her own hair. Hiding hair with hair. Insane. *shakes head*

My grandmother was born in 1908 in Glasgow to a minister and his wife. She told me that on Sundays they had to open a window and put playing cards on the outside sill for the day. Aparently cards had something to do with the devil and couldn't be inside the house on Sundays :)

Of course the Bible talks about Adam and Eve not being ashamed of their nakedness in the Garden. The shame came only after The Fall. Ashamed of God's divine design, I guess. Makes sense to me. Then again, neither of them had belly-buttons, did they? Which are pretty shameful. Not to mention pretty poorly designed. I had a piece of popcorn stuck in mine once. Serious irritation. Tenneral, it's all just madness.

As a child I could never understand why Adam and Steve's nakedness was sinful. Gawd made them naked in his own image. They were perfectly happy running naked around the garden of Eden, until eating from the tree of knowledge taught them that nakedness was wrong. That tree seems to be a few leaves short of a branch to me! Sexual neurosis and guilt/shame about nudity are part of the Judeao/Christian inheritance.

On the other hand, St. Francis of Assisi's father took his son to the bishop and complained about his religiosity, even though he was wearing clothes provided by Dad. So, Francis took off all his clothes and returned them to Dad. Thus he started his religious life completely naked. Though not for long, as the bishop immediately covered him up with his own cloak. He was canonized within a year of his death. Nice video, as always. :)

You see that here in Korea as well.

The ratio of "people getting shot vs showing niples" anyone have seen in movies is probably 100:1. It would be more logical the other way around.

Good video you have a very good style

I am ALWAYS completely naked, under my clothes.

I haven't thought about Joseph Labre in a long time. Back when I aspired to religious life and priesthood, I knew someone who called poor Joseph the patron saint of those rejected by religious orders -- a title I suspect Joseph was never officially given, despite his history of being rejected.

HaHa! Right you are professor, thanks for telling the naked truth! I think older people are far more prudish than young people and yes, it is a result of strict upbringing. In the U.S. in the 50's, I Love Lucy showed a wife who was *expecting* but not pregnant, perish the thought. And they slept in twin beds, not a double. We were brought up to have relentless scruples. Young people today are much more relaxed, and find the humor so evident in anatomy!! Kids bring fresh air to the subject.

Great video and so true. If I needed to see a naked woman at school I had to borrow Peter H*******'s hymn book that was embellished with sellotaped cut outs! ... It helped pass the time in church! lol

because of all the roman studies I did I am a big fan of exfoliating... it really does keep your skin looking youthful. clothes are a tool... anyone who thinks they are a morality flag is a tool. :D

There's a strigil scene in 'I, Claudius' and I always wondered what the object was called. Thank you. It is amusing that we're the only species on earth that worries about nudity. As a painter who works with life models, I'm far more used to people being relaxed about nudity, so it always seems surprising - and silly - when I encounter a prudish attitude. This video restores some good sense to the issue!
